Locate Federal Custody Releases

To find someone released from federal custody after an event connected with Lawrence County, choose the system that held the person. The Bureau of Prisons covers sentenced federal imprisonment, ICE covers civil immigration detention, and the U.S. Marshals Service handles many federal pretrial and transport situations. These systems do not replace one another or the Lawrence County jail record. A federal release result can also coexist with supervised release, parole, an immigration handoff, or another agency's custody. Match the person and custody type first, then use the federal docket and agency record to confirm the reported departure.

Federal Custody Release Routes

The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prison records, the ICE Online Detainee Locator covers its distinct civil-detention population, and the USMS custody description explains the Marshals Service role in federal pretrial detention and transport.

Federal custody is not one database. BOP Inmate Locator covers people in federal prison and retains results for releases after 1982. ICE Online Detainee Locator covers current immigration detainees and people released from ICE custody during a limited recent period. USMS has no BOP-style public historic release locator. The federal court docket supplies detention, release, sentencing, and supervised-release orders.

A local Ironton or Lawrence County arrest does not become federal merely because the name is absent from a county page. Begin with the Lawrence jail when local booking facts exist. Ask whether the person was discharged, moved to another county, delivered to ODRC, or handed to a federal or immigration agency. The destination entry determines which federal tool, if any, belongs next.

Release from one agency is limited. It does not prove the person is free from another custodian or from court-ordered supervision.

Search BOP Release Records

The BOP Inmate Locator accepts a BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known. It also offers a name search with biographical fields. Search results can show name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and location or status. Compare all available identifiers before attributing a result.

  1. Choose the number search when an official federal identifier is available.
  2. Otherwise enter the exact name and narrow with supported biographical fields.
  3. Open the matching result and read Release Date with location or status.
  4. Distinguish a past released result, a future projected date, “Unknown,” and “In Transit.”
  5. Verify the sentence and supervision terms in the federal court docket.

A past release date with Released or no institution means BOP reports the person outside its custody as of that date. A future date is projected. “Unknown” means the term is undetermined, while “In Transit” is not release. Community Corrections Management can relate to halfway-house or home-confinement administration and is not the same as unrestricted final discharge.

Read Federal Release Results

Each federal result has a strict scope. Treat the agency as the subject of the status statement. BOP release is release from BOP custody. ICE release is release from ICE custody. A court order may impose supervised release after imprisonment. Another warrant or detainer can cause an immediate handoff.

ResultWhat it means
BOP Released with past dateNo longer in BOP custody as of the reported date
BOP future dateProjected prison release, subject to change
BOP In TransitStill moving within a custody process
ICE recent released resultRelease from ICE custody only
No USMS locator resultExpected because no comparable historic locator exists

The federal sentencing docket is durable evidence for the prison term and supervised-release conditions. It can also show a pretrial release order. The agency custody record and court order answer different questions and should be kept together.

Federal Records Request Contact

No Lawrence County federal facility contact applies to all three systems. Use the agency tied to the custody event. A BOP FOIA request can seek an identified former inmate's releasable record using full name, date and place of birth, register number, and a stated fee limit. For a USMS pretrial or transport event, use a narrow USMS FOIA request and the federal docket.

Federal Custody Record Routes

BOP: Inmate Locator and BOP FOIA
ICE: Online Detainee Locator and current ICE contact channels
USMS: Federal docket and USMS FOIA
Local handoff record: Lawrence County Jail, 115 South Fifth Street, Ironton, OH 45638, 740-532-5819
Key detail: Agency identifier and approximate custody dates

For a pre-1982 federal prison record, BOP directs researchers to the National Archives. Provide the name, date of birth or approximate age, race, and approximate incarceration dates. Keep the request narrow and ask for existing releasable records rather than a new explanation.

Check ICE Lawrence Handoffs

ICE Online Detainee Locator is time-limited. Official ICE material says it includes current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the previous 60 days. Search with the nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or with exact name, date of birth, and country. Spelling and source-data limits can produce no result.

A recent released result addresses ICE custody only. It does not decide the Lawrence criminal case, immigration case outcome, or any other custody. After 60 days, absence from the locator is expected and cannot disprove earlier detention or release. The applicable immigration record or court process must carry the older question.

An immigration detainer can create a direct custody change. Departure from Lawrence County Jail may close county criminal custody while ICE immediately takes the person. Ask the jail for destination and transport documents before calling that event a community release.

Trace USMS Release Records

The U.S. Marshals Service takes custody of federal arrestees and may place or move them through federal, state, local, or private facilities while a case is pending. It also transports people committed after sentencing. There is no public USMS historical locator equivalent to BOP's service. A missing BOP record does not show that no federal pretrial custody existed.

Search the federal case docket for a detention order, release order, acquittal, sentence, or commitment. Then seek a targeted USMS record when agency transport or custody timing remains unclear. Include the person's full name, federal case number, known identifier, and approximate dates. The physical jail that held the person may also have its own confinement or transport entry.

Pretrial release
A court-authorized release before final disposition, often with conditions.
Supervised release
Federal court supervision that follows imprisonment under the sentence.
Detainer
A request or notice that another authority may take custody.
Commitment
The legal delivery of a sentenced person into the responsible custody system.

Lawrence County Federal Trail

A sound local-to-federal trail starts with the Lawrence confinement record. Ask for the register entry, release or discharge paper, and any transport or destination record. The register states the local discharge date, but the destination determines whether the person entered BOP, USMS, ICE, ODRC, another county, or the community.

The Lawrence court docket explains the local criminal event. A federal docket explains the federal case. Neither should be replaced with a broad web search. Match names with date of birth, case number, federal register or A-number, and approximate custody dates. Similar names can otherwise link unrelated records.

The Lawrence County release record route covers the sheriff and local courts before the federal branch. Use it when the custody began locally. If the facts are federal from the start, lead with the federal docket and agency identifier.

Federal Versus State Custody

ODRC is Ohio's state prison and supervision agency. BOP is the federal prison agency. ICE civil immigration detention and USMS federal pretrial custody have still different roles. A person sentenced by Lawrence County Common Pleas ordinarily follows the state path unless a separate federal matter exists.

Custody typeCorrect lead system
Lawrence County jail staySheriff confinement record and Lawrence court
Ohio prison sentenceODRC Offender Search and Common Pleas
Federal prison sentenceBOP Locator and federal sentencing docket
Federal pretrial or transportFederal docket and USMS request
Immigration detentionICE locator and immigration process

Current-custody and historic-release tools also differ. BOP preserves post-1982 released results. ICE's released-person locator window is brief. USMS requires docket and request work. No system should be stretched beyond its stated population or time range.

Verify Final Federal Status

A final status statement should name the agency and date. “BOP reports release on [date]” is more exact than “free.” Add the federal court's supervised-release term when it applies. If ICE or another custodian followed, state the handoff rather than community release. If the federal record says “In Transit” or “Unknown,” preserve that label and continue checking.

Data can change after a court or agency acts. A just-entered order may not appear everywhere at once. Contact the custodian for current instructions and seek the written record when timing matters. Do not rely on a current roster to prove an old release.

For an old BOP event, the locator and federal docket usually lead. For a recent ICE event, search within the 60-day released window. For USMS, begin with the docket. For a Lawrence jail handoff, keep the sheriff's destination record beside the federal result so the full custody chain remains clear.
